It is around puberty that mens hair removal becomes an issue for us males. For most men hair removal instructions consisted of something like ‘Splash. Foam. Shave with. Shave against.’ for our faces. Later, when we started getting hair on the rest of our body we were left to fend on our own or take advice from our friends who might know just as little as we do.

This blog investigates the things about mens hair removal that we were too afraid to ask or could not find out in the era before the Internet. We will explore the different methods of mens hair removal currently in the marketplace and whether some or all of these techniques can be used by us. And issues like whether these ’solutions’ can be applied all over your body or will your application of hair removal cream to your genitals (some people actually do this) be the last thing people will remember about you?

The whole gamut of hair removal techniques will be covered from a review of the basics like mens shaving techniques to the things to consider when thinking about laser hair removal. For example: did you know that laser hair removal is minimally effective when you have light toned skin and a light hair color? And some of the things that women have long ago learned about waxing, like causing ingrown hairs, will be highlighted before you consider male waxing.

Or consider the popularized mens hair removal technique of depilatory hair removal cream. Did you know that the cream actually dissolves your hair and could cause chemical burns if not used correctly? Oh, and that it has a very strong smell (’like sperm’)?

Maybe you’ll feel safer with a more technical solution like electrolysis – lets just zap that hair follicle and that will be that. Or will it? And what is sugaring? Is that even a valid mens hair removal technique?

These and many other issues and concerns about mens hair removal will be addressed and explored in this blog. Perhaps the ultimate answer for you will be to make peace with your body hair. Or perhaps you will find a reliable hair removal technique that you did not even know existed before. Whatever the solution will be for you, we will help inform you of the choices you have so that you can make an informed decision.

Male waxing

If there is one topic that can make almost any man flinch, it is the topic of male waxing. Ironically it is something we have almost come to expect of our women, but when the reverse applies we cringe.Yet more and more men are seriously considering male body waxing as an option.

Is male waxing for you?

The first question to ask if you are considering  doing the dirty,is to evaluate your threshold for pain. Lets be absolutely clear about it – waxing hurts – especially if you are doing it for the first time. If you struggle to pull of plasters that stick to your body hairs because of pain, you might struggle with male waxing as it is a lot more painful.

A lot of men also consider male waxing simply because they are tired of regular shaving or trimming of their body hair by less effective means. Waxing then becomes an option because the hair takes about 4 to 6 weeks to grow back depending on your rate of hair growth. If you then continue with waxing the hair can become thinner and allow more time between waxes. It can even become permanent if kept up for a protracted period of time.

Men with skin problems like lesions, pimples, rashes or sunburns shouldn’t wax. If you are taking medicines for skin treatment, for example Roaccutane, you should consult your physician and/or skin therapist as it might cause side-effects.

Male waxing options

You can do the waxing at home with a waxing kit from the local pharmacy. If the pharmacy doesn’t have male waxing kits, most female waxing products will work for men too. Just always make sure to read the product instructions as it can really go wrong if not done correctly.

If you go the home waxing route, it is recommended that you start on a non-sensitive are that are easily reachable, for example the back of your hands or your forearms. Doing this will tell you whether the pain is something you can stomach and whether your hair and skin type is suitable for waxing.

On the sensitive and/or out-of-reach hairy areas I’d highly recommend that you go to a local male spa or -clinic (even some female spas have male treatment options) as they have trained mens hair removal technicians with loads of experience. Just phone and ask them about their policies on male waxing and the options available to you. They will also instruct you on what to do before coming in for treatment – whether you need to take a shower, trim your body hair, or if you are afraid of the pain they might suggest taking a pain pill before you come in.

Skin care after waxing

It is quite common to experience redness and irritation after waxing. Natural moisturizers like E45 or Aloe Vera gel can soothe the skin irritation. Also stay away from alcohol/ethanol based products like after shave or deodorant on the first day after treatment.

You might also want to hold off on that hot shower for at least 24 hours as the outer layer of dead skin cells have just come off and the skin is very sensitive at this stage. For the same reason you would be advised to stay out of the sun or avoid any excessive heating that might burn the skin.

It is also a good idea to exfoliate daily after waxing (starting 4-7 days in to give the skin some time to recover) as it decreases the risk of ingrown hair and small pimples.

Male waxing is a good male hair removal option and it can have good results for you so long as you know what to expect and how to treat yourself afterwards.
