So far we’ve only looked at waxing prices for professional waxing, but in this post we are going to look at some options for men to do waxing at home. So you decided you are willing to try waxing at home and want to know what the waxing prices for home waxing kits are. There are several male waxing kits on the
market and they tend to offer similar value.

Be careful when tempted to use an easy female waxing hair removal kit as women’s hair is softer and less coarse than men’s so they come out more easily. You might find that you have to do an area several times if you are using your girlfriends waxing kit, and that is going to hurt. So take a bit of extra effort and find a waxing kit designed for men to use. The waxing price thereof isn’t that much higher than that of women’s waxing kits.

Also decide whether you want strip wax or non-strip wax. Strip wax are more common and generally cheaper whereas non-strip wax are more useful for waxing sensitive areas like your underarms. Do not try to wax your genitals at home! You can tear
and bleed yourself very easily, so just don’t. For the out of reach areas, get a friend or partner to help you. Home waxing isn’t something you can do quickly before a shower so make sure you allow yourself enough time to do the waxing properly.

Male waxing kit prices

Men’s Tea Tree Warm Wax

Specially designed for the coarser hair of men, this product can be used on the back, chest and legs. The strips are also extra large so is more efficient on the large body hair areas like the back and chest. Make sure you get extra strips though if you want to do more than one body area at a time.

Nads Hair Removal Strips for Men

Comes with 12 double sided strips for 24 effective strips. Read and follow the instructions and ensure you have some treatment lotion for proper after care. If used over time, the hair should grow back thinner.

Moom for Men Body Hair Removal kit

This is a certified organic product specially designed for men. It is gentle and effective which makes it quite suitable for sensitive skin. You might also want to get a refill pack and some extra strips though as it is only a six ounce
pack.

Also make sure to get some aftercare products while you are at it. You’ll need some natural soothing lotion to soothe the skin immediately after waxing; some anti-bacterial treatment to prevent follicitus; as well as some exfoliation scrub later on when the hair starts growing back to prevent ingrown hairs. The waxing prices above are just the basic kit, but you’ll probable need to allow some extra funds for more strips and after care products.

In our last post we looked at average waxing costs for professional waxing services in various US cities, and today we will look at the prices of similar treatments in the UK. Remember that waxing, while long lasting, isn’t a method of permanent hair removal, so you’ll have to go for more sessions once your hair grows back.

Make sure you are informed and prepared for your waxing session before you walk into the clinic to manage your own expectations. Waxing cost tend to fluctuate from spa to spa and the different treatment areas of the body have different prices. Your hair also needs to be at least ¼ to ½ inch in
length for the wax to have something to stick to. And there is some pain associated with the procedure (paying someone to inflict pain on you?) so you might want to drink some aspirin before you go in.

Once you are ready, look at the table of waxing costs below and make sure to bring enough cash or a credit card with you (in addition to loose clothing and other preparatory actions that you have checked with the spa – you did check with them haven’t you?).

The wax prices you will pay for professional waxing will differ from place to place. The size of the area you want to have waxed will be important. You may also choose to take up a package deal which tend to bring the overall cost down a bit.

Then you have to remember that whatever wax prices you paid, you’ll probably have to do it again in 6 to 8 weeks time as that is the time it takes for your hair to grow back. But over time you should see a decrease in the density and coarseness of hair growth.

Today, we will look at different cities in the US and what a typical cost will be for waxing the different areas of the body. Always phone your local spa/clinic to check that they accept male clients and they should also advise you how much it will cost and what preparations you need to take.

Below is a table of these wax prices in the four cities of New York, Los Angeles, Seattle and Miami. Not all the spa’s offer all the treatments, and different spas include different body areas in their definitions, so check with your spa what exactly is included and what not (for example: does ‘chest’ waxing include the stomach, or does ’back’ waxing include the shoulders).

Home laser hair removal kits

Home laser hair removal might be an option if you don’t want to fork out thousands, but it still quite expensive. Below I’ve listed some of the more popular home laser hair removal kits that are available on the market and the costs of those. Before you embark on this path, consult your physician or a skin specialist to ensure that this treatment is suitable for you.

Tria home laser hair removal kit – $595

The most expensive of the home laser hair removal kits, this one is approved by the FDA and it is based on the same systems that professionals use. You use it by progressively zapping the areas where you want to remove the hair until everything has been covered.

It has a skin sensor on it that might tell whether it will work or your skin or not. If it doesn’t work for you, they do offer a thirty day money back guarantee.

Set the device to a setting you are comfortable with and away you go. The average review (of 2) are 4.5 stars.

Silk ‘n Personal – $449 and $69 for additional bulbs

This device uses home pulse light (HPL) to do the laser hair removal job. It targets the melanin pigment in the hair follicle with the laser and its effect is to inhibit hair growth.

The manufacturers do not recommend that you use this for the face or neck, so if those areas are the ones you were interested in, you’re out of luck. Some of the men that have written reviews on it seems to suggest that it is not as effective on men as it is on women. Its up to you whether you want to test this or not.

You’ll also have to buy additional bulbs for the device and at $69 a pop it doesn’t come cheap. Still, it is more cost effective than 6 sessions at a professional clinic. The average rating (of 13) at Amazon is 3.5 stars.

Silk ‘n SensEpil – $449 and $49 for additional bulbs

This device can deliver up 750 pulses (per bulb) – each pulse is one area that is ‘zapped’. This is about enough to cover the legs, arms, under arms and genital area.

Also uses bulbs so you have to get a few extras of those for ongoing treatment.

The one person that have written a review on it has given it a 5 star rating.

A good suggestion made by an Amazon reviewer before buying or using any of these products is to consult your physician. Most home laser hair removal products are only suited to light skin and dark hair combination, so you might find that none of these products are for you. Some areas of your body will always be out of reach, no matter what hair removal method you try – so either have someone help you with those areas or go to a professional.

Overall, you might not get the same professional effect with a home laser hair removal kit, but it will be cheaper. That is a trade-off that you will have to decide before you buy any of these products.

In our previous post, we studied laser hair removal prices in the US, and today we will look at the similar professional treatment pricing in the UK. Keep in mind that laser hair removal tends to work best for people with light skin and dark hair and is less effective on people with light hair or dark skin.

When researching the prices for laser hair removal in the UK we’ve come across several gateways and groups that offer treatment all over the UK at a set price. For our
comparison purposes we tried to only look at specific treatments in the cities of London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast.

Also note that where prices appear out of sync with the competition (either much cheaper or much more expensive) it might be because they include or exclude areas in their definition. For example the price one company might offer for chest laser hair removal is half of the others, but it might be that the others include the tummy area and this one doesn’t. Always check with the clinic you are considering what specific areas are included and what is not.

Laser hair removal costs

The laser hair removal costs you will pay for your treatment, depends on a couple of things. First is the size of the area that you want treated. Having your whole back treated is more expensive than having your armpits treated.

Secondly, is the thickness of the hair in the area you want treated. If you have higher and thicker density of hair than the average person, the treatment might take longer and result in higher costs. Thirdly is the clinic you go and in which area you are going for treatment – a treatment in London or New York is likely more expensive than a treatment in Bath or a treatment in Buffalo. Having a package or doing more than one area at a time might also save you some money, rather than doing it individually.

Below I’ve set out laser hair removal costs for specific clinics in the locations New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston.  The costs is broken down into the size or area that you want treated and is only the cost for one session – typically you’ll need about six sessions for a more permanent effect. The only thing you need to add or change to get to an estimate of laser hair removal cost for yourself is whether you have more or less hair than average.

Where possible, I’ve tried to differentiate costs between men and women, but you’ll need to consult with your clinic as to whether or not they offer the same cost treatment to men as to women. And find out what exactly is covered – for example, does the back treatment include the shoulders, does the chest area include the stomach, does full face include the neck, or  what area is covered by the ‘brazilian’ treatment.

Leg waxing

Women seem to have been waxing their legs for ages, while men are only recently catching on to the trend of leg waxing. Traditionally only men that competed in sports like cycling, swimming or body building even considered leg waxing, but now men from all walks of life are starting to do it.

Source: Flickr – paalia

If you are predisposed to spider veins, stay away from leg waxing as it might make it even more prominent. Having a pain killer an hour or two before doing the waxing might reduce the pain and discomfort.

If you  go to a salon / spa to do your male leg waxing, check whether your feet is also included or not. Waxing your feet might be good for the hairless-feet- in-sandals-on-the-beach look, so it is worth considering. Also consider a spa if you can’t reach all the parts of your legs or aren’t confident that you can finish once the pain has started (or because you can’t reach the back of your legs). Some spas also include a buttock wax or Speedo wax option, so decide what you want and go for that. Costs for a full leg wax ranges from $50 – $80.

The wax gets applied in big swathes with a wooden spatula. A muslin- or cotton cloth gets pressed on. Then giving the wax some time to cool down and get properly acquainted with the hair, it gets ripped of quickly in the direction against the hair growth.

After getting the leg waxing, apply proper after care treatment and don’t wear tights or other tight clothing as it will trap moisture and cause the pores to close. This is undesirable as it might cause ingrown hairs and follicitus (small pimples).

Smooth legs are within your grasp if you are willing to grit your teeth and get some leg waxing done.

Pubic waxing

The pubic waxing region treatment is often referred to as the BCS or Back, Crack and Sack wax. More and more spa and clinics who accept men for waxing are also offering to do pubic waxing. Check with your local spa whether they do and whether they have an experience person on the team doing it. Don’t try to wax your genitals at home as you can rip and tear it easily – let someone else do it, trust me.

Source: Flickr – Kumanday

There are two options for pubic hair waxing. The first is the Brazilian which will wax all hair save a little landing strip or mustache above the penis. The second option is the or the ‘Hollywood’ wax – the Full Monty – which will remove all the hair around your genitals.

It is a good idea to clean the area with a shower before hand so you don’t embarrass yourself with uncleanness or bad odors.

Feel free to remind the person waxing you to be careful as the area is sensitive (they should know, but better safe than sorry).

You’ll be asked to stretch the skin taut which will bring the hair follicles closer to the surface and make it easier to remove.

It is not unusual to get an erection while the procedure is going on, so no need to feel embarrassed about it. They are professionals and will get on with the job. It actually helps by stretching the skin and causing adrenalin flow which will numb some of the pain.

Take good care of your skin afterwards by rubbing on some anti-septic and natural moisturizer like Aloe Vera gel. And wear loose cotton clothing to allow the skin to breathe and prohibit moisture from building up which can cause bacteria to grow. Don’t have sex for the first 24-48 hours after treatment, as it also risks infecting the follicles (or the torn skin if there is any). After that, you might consider getting a gentle exfoliating brush to prevent ingrown hairs.

Taking proper care to prepare before as well as after care treatment will ensure that you survive to wax another today. Pubic waxing is painful but for a lot of men it is worth it.

Chest waxing for men

Posted by: admin on January 19th, 2010

Posted: male waxing

The idea of chest waxing for men have no doubt been spurred on by the media’s portrayal of the bare chested and successful sex symbol men. From David Beckham to Will Smith, the bare chest speaks of fertility and success, so why not you?

You might be tempted to try the home waxing kit on your chest. After all, how difficult can it be, right? Well, you can, and at least it is a body part that is within reach, but do you want to do all that painful ripping stuff to yourself when the guilt can be transferred to someone else? Whether you are going to do it yourself (don’t say I didn’t try to warn you), or whether you’ll get a professional to help, the preparation and after care should be the same.

Preparing your chest for waxing

Take a shower / bath before your waxing session. This cleans away any dirt and grime allowing the wax better grip. It also takes care of bacteria which might cause infection of the hair follicles leading to small pimples all over (follicitus). If you have really long chest hair, it might also be good to trim the fur with a clipper to about a number 2 or 3 (the wax still needs at least ¼ to ½ inch of hair to grab on to).

If you are going to a spa or salon for treatment, ask them if you need to do any additional preparation. If you have any concerns now is the type to find out if it is a problem.

You should never wax the nipples, and when waxing around them just be extra careful as the are very sensitive and can bleed or tear easily. Also decide (or ask the person doing it) whether you want the stomach waxed as well, as it is not automatically included.

The wax gets applied in the direction of the hair growth and ripped off in the opposite direction. If it is the first time you are doing male chest waxing, you might experience some bleeding as the hair gets ripped out of the follicle quite violently. Make sure to apply an anti-septic afterwards to minimise the risk of infection.

Underarm waxing

You might consider underarm waxing at the same time. Waxing your armpits will improve your hygiene as it generates less sweat and perspiration, allowing less favorable circumstance for bacteria and odors to breed. Hairless armpits is also more pleasing aesthetically as illustrated by almost all male models lifting their arms above their heads.

So check with the clinic whether underarm waxing is included or not. If it is, make sure they are using hard wax (non-strip) for waxing your armpits as it is better for the sensitive skin.

After your chest waxing

Immediately afterwards, apply anti-septic and some natural soothing lotion like Aloe Vera gel. Wear loose clothing to allow the skin to breathe. And remember that the hair follicles are open for 24 – 48 hrs so stay away from anything that can infect or harm it: direct sunlight, sun-beds, saunas, other people’s skins (no sex), etc.

Keep applying the soothing gel/cream and the redness and irritation should dissipate. As the hair starts growing again from below the skin, you run the risk of ingrown hairs. To combat this, use exfoliating lotion 3 to 5 times a week to clear away dead skin cells and leave the pores open for hair to get through. If you still get ingrown hairs, it is best to treat it with special lotions, rather than trying to dig them out.

If you’ve taken care of your chest before and after waxing, you will experience the smooth chest effect that you were after. The hair will eventually grow back and in 6 to 8 weeks time, you’ll need to do another male chest waxing session. But after the first time, the hair is softer and the pain becomes less, so it might well be worth it to be a sex symbol!

Male back waxing

Male back waxing should be done with the help of someone else like a partner or a professional aesthetician. It is the most common area that is waxed by men and the least painful, so it is a good place to start.

If you go to a clinic, ask whether the shoulders are included as it sometimes isn’t and you might want to include it.

Wax is applied with a spatula in the direction of hair growth. A muslin cloth is put on top of the wax and after setting a bit, pulled of quickly in the direction against the growth of hair.

The small or lower area of the back is actually a bit more sensitive than the rest of your back, so it might be a good idea to ask the person doing the waxing to start there. Get the most painful part out of the way and it can only get less painful from there.

After the wax, remove any remaining wax and apply a soothing gel and some anti-bacterial lotion to prevent bacterial infections. When you are getting dressed again, where loose fitting clothing that are soft on the skin like cotton.

After a day or two, the redness and swelling should be gone and if you’ve applied the correct after care treatments, you should now have smoothly waxed back for the next 3 to 6 weeks. The hair will grow back softer and more slowly the more you do it. So keep going for the male back waxing treatment to achieve that smooth look for longer.
